This is the title of my latest course you can get on line and it is proving to be very popular. Colour and tonal values seem to be a bit of a mystery to a lot of painters, so this course was created to help to clear the mist of confusion.
When I am teaching on my painting holidays, quite often students will ask me what is wrong with their painting. They say ‘it seem flat and ordinary’. And quite often I can see that is is the lack of contrast that makes it look flat and dull. Just the addition of some really dark or intense colours can be the difference that makes the difference
For example on the left there are some painted squares using the same colour, lamp black. But they are all painted with varying amounts of water, therefore making them more or less dark in colour that another. It is this variation which can really lift your painting and bring drama and life to it. Making it stand out from the others.
After all you need to have the grey wet days to enjoy the warm and sunny ones !
